In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, dwelt a shepherd boy. His being was pure, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was to look after his flock of ewes.

Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind across the solo tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day in day, guarding his wards instilled in him a notion of tranquil contentment.

Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.

Stories of wild beasts preying on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf did come to here prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
